Hurla Post # 3

"Did you just tweet that?"

I've been a Facebook user for a few years now and one of my favorite things about it is checking status updates.  What i didn't know is that they got the idea from Twitter.  Real-time updates has been the idea behind Twitter since it was created. I don't have a Twitter account, but after finding out how popular it has become and how many prominent people use Twitter I'm actually considering getting an account.

An interesting aspect of Twitter is that instead of using just advertisements directly like Facebook does, some businesses offer promotional offers.  For instance, if you "tweet" about a new product you could be entered in a drawing for a Macbook.  Social media can not only be used to reconnect or meet new people but also be used as a business tool.

One of the downsides I've taken notice of for Twitter is that it may not be the easiest thing to figure out at first.  Also, many people may have an account but don't always keep active when using it.  Although there may be downsides, every social network has its ups and downs.  I'll keep this in mind, when considering acquiring an account.

Hurla Post #2

What's the first thing somebody does when getting online? I'm betting it's checking their Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter, if not all of the above.  According to Mashable.com 1 in every 13 people on Earth use Facebook, and that's just one aspect of social media.

I'm not familiar with many social networking sites other than Facebook. I've never seen a Twitter account and I haven't used MySpace since I was in Junior High.

It's not surprising to me, that many people use Facebook. It's simple, sometimes addictive, and a good way to catch up with people you've lost touch with.  There are several reasons to a join Facebook.

If one has questions regarding how Facebook was made or who created it, then look no further than "The Social Network" a movie about Facebook and it's creators. The man behind Facebook is currently Time magazine's Person of the Year.

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, has profited in many ways from his creation. There's the obvious monetary gain, but at the same time he likes helping others reconnect or just stay in touch with others.  He understands the psychological part of a social network and keeps it running, offers improvements, and has some of the brightest minds in the country to help him out.

Here's a link to show just how powerful Zuckerberg is considered.

Hurla Post # 1

Blogging is something almost completely new to me.  Before taking this class I had no idea so many people blogged or even that organizations had bloggers.  I viewed blogging as more of a hobby and didn't know anyone who had a personal blog.

After the readings in class I've found out that blogs are good way to show your expertise on a subject, ramble, or just share ideas with others who have the same passion as yourself.

If I were to contine a blog outside of class, I would have many options to write about.  Horror movies are my favorite thing to watch and so I could have a blog devoted entirely to horror movies.  I may not be an expert in any area, but it would be fun to discuss the latest movies or classics in the genre.

Potentially less interesting, I could blog about being a student at Washburn.  Students from Washburn or other colleges could be interested in the student life here.  High school students looking at prospective colleges could also follow.

Although I have been skeptical about blogs in the past, I do believe that blogging is worth a shot.  If blogs could potentially advance someone's career, than why not go for it? In my experience it's always been good to write it all out.
