Hurla Post #6
After a recent presentation in class, I became aware of three social media campaigns. These campaigns were primarily local and showed what a focused group of people can do to raise awareness for their projects.
The "Vote Yes" campaign was for Topeka. The campaign used humorous and both serious aspects of the issues to help get noticed. I liked how much the residents of Topeka got involved, uploading pictures of potholes around the city. The commercials advertised "pothole syndrome" and made the issue of fixing Topeka streets almost ridiculous to ignore. This campaign was very successful and the vote passed.
The "Think Big Topeka" campaign was immense for the city. While Google did not end up choosing Topeka, it's evident that a great effort was given from officials and many residents of the city. This project was the one that had the most impact I would say. I knew Topeka had changed it's name to Google for some period of time, but I did not know that this campaign was behind it. When Google returned the favor and changed it's name to Topeka on April Fool's Day last year, I realized that this was a much bigger deal than I expected.
After hearing about these different campaigns, it has helped me realize how big of an impact social media may have on an individual or a whole community.

Hurla Post #5
What's the first place you go to when connecting to the internet?
While your answer may be Facebook or Myspace, I have a feeling that if it's anything else, you probably start with Google.
When connecting to internet, I start with Google Chrome. I really like the features of Google Chrome. As I open up a new tab I'm able to see my eight most visited sites and go to one from there. The browser is able to be customized to my liking and I think it runs faster than Firefox and Internet Explorer.
Besides Google's new browser and other services Google offers, the search engine itself is what Google is mainly known for. Bing and Yahoo are other search engines, but they don't always add up to what Google has to offer.
I personally believe Yahoo isn't given enough credit for their site. You can access news, trends, and even Yahoo! sites to browse around.
Bing seems more similar to Google, but has more design and could even have more specific options to narrow down your search.
Basically, Google is all about simplicity. I don't know if one of these search engines is a clear winner compared to one another though. Depending on what you're searching for, the reason why you're searching, and the quality of information you wish to find I think that you wouldn't use the same search engine for all of these. It truly depends on your own personal taste.
Google is definitely the most known, so I can see why people usually view Google as superior.
With everything being said, for the next week I'm going to incorporate Bing and Yahoo and use them just as much as I use Google. By doing this, I will find out which searches work better and at the same time, be able to give more credit to Yahoo and Bing. I encourage everyone else to do the same as well!

Hurla Post #4
This week in class, we discussed Hulu compared to Netflix. In the past, I have mainly been a user of Hulu. This weekend however, I started Netflix's 30 day free trial. Already, I know this is something I will continue to subscribe to.
Hulu is great, but I would not pay for Hulu Plus. While the plus option includes more television shows and more episodes, there are still ads. The advertisements don't bother me too much, but Netflix videos are ad free. Another reason why I would not purchase Hulu Plus, is because the regular service is free. The free version shows the latest episodes of many shows and that's usually all i want to watch.
Netflix doesn't really have new releases streaming online and that's fine with me. If i wanted to see a new release, I would see it in theaters or just rent it from an actual video store when it came out. The movies I like to watch are horror movies or comedies. Thousands of these movies are available instantly and the genres never get old to me.
Here is a video also talking about the difference between Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon.
Amazon is offering a new service of streaming videos also. I don't know much about this new service because I don't use Amazon, but I liked the analogies used in the video.
Right now, I'm content with using both Hulu and Netflix. Hulu lets me watch the shows that I've missed during the week. Netflix lets me watch horribly awesome scary movies. I see this as a win-win situation. If I start to use Amazon, then maybe I'll consider their service too, but until then I'll leave you with the Alec Baldwin Hulu commercial.

Hurla Post # 3
"Did you just tweet that?"
I've been a Facebook user for a few years now and one of my favorite things about it is checking status updates. What i didn't know is that they got the idea from Twitter. Real-time updates has been the idea behind Twitter since it was created. I don't have a Twitter account, but after finding out how popular it has become and how many prominent people use Twitter I'm actually considering getting an account.
An interesting aspect of Twitter is that instead of using just advertisements directly like Facebook does, some businesses offer promotional offers. For instance, if you "tweet" about a new product you could be entered in a drawing for a Macbook. Social media can not only be used to reconnect or meet new people but also be used as a business tool.
One of the downsides I've taken notice of for Twitter is that it may not be the easiest thing to figure out at first. Also, many people may have an account but don't always keep active when using it. Although there may be downsides, every social network has its ups and downs. I'll keep this in mind, when considering acquiring an account.

What's the first thing somebody does when getting online? I'm betting it's checking their Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter, if not all of the above. According to Mashable.com 1 in every 13 people on Earth use Facebook, and that's just one aspect of social media.

I'm not familiar with many social networking sites other than Facebook. I've never seen a Twitter account and I haven't used MySpace since I was in Junior High.
It's not surprising to me, that many people use Facebook. It's simple, sometimes addictive, and a good way to catch up with people you've lost touch with. There are several reasons to a join Facebook.

If one has questions regarding how Facebook was made or who created it, then look no further than "The Social Network" a movie about Facebook and it's creators. The man behind Facebook is currently Time magazine's Person of the Year.

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, has profited in many ways from his creation. There's the obvious monetary gain, but at the same time he likes helping others reconnect or just stay in touch with others. He understands the psychological part of a social network and keeps it running, offers improvements, and has some of the brightest minds in the country to help him out.
